As the largest country in the world, containing one eighth of the inhabited land area on Earth, Russia is a whopping 17,075,400 square kilometers (6,592,800 square miles). Russia is located in northern Eurasia and is a federal semi-presidential republic. Russia shares many borders with neighboring countries such as Norway, Finland, Poland, Ukraine, China, North Korea and more.
It is approximated that one quarter of the world's fresh water comes from the world's largest forest reserves and lakes within Russia. The country also contains some of the world's largest reserves of mineral and energy resources, and is the largest oil and second largest natural gas producer.
Since the 3rd century AD, Russia has been expanding to be the great empire it is today. The country today ranks for having one of the top largest economies by nominal GDP as well as being of the five recognized nuclear weapon states and possessing the largest stock of mass destruction weapons. Russia is a great power, and is a permanent member on the United Nations Security Council as well as on council for other world organizations.
