The Republic of Lithuania is a country in northern Europe. It has approximately 3 million citizens, and its official language is Lithuanian.

In 1569, Lithuania and Poland joined together into the Poland-Lithuania Commonwealth. This state lasted for more than 200 years, until they fell on hard times and some of their neighbors decided to split up their territory between them. Starting with the First Partition of Poland in 1772, the Russian Empire, Prussia, and Hapsburg Austria started dividing up their land between themselves, ending the Commonwealth.

Lithuania gained its independence again in 1918. However, by 1940 it was being occupied by foreign powers again, first by the Soviet Union, and then by Nazi Germany, and then by the Soviet Union again after World War 2. Lithuania officially declared itself an independent state again in 1990, just 1 year before the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Lithuania is a member of the European Union, Council of Europe, and NATO. They have one of the fastest growing economies in the EU and it is starting to take its place in the landscape of the world stage.
