Guernsey is a country located in the English Channel, near the coast of Normandy. Defense of the country is done by the United Kingdom, as Guernsey is what's known as a British Crown dependency. This means that the country is not actually a part of the United Kingdom, which means it also is not a part of the European Union.

Guernsey does have its own government, a body called the States of Deliberation, which contains officials elected every four years. Although this government can draft laws, they do not go into effect until they are approved at meetings held in London, United Kingdom. Once these laws are approved, they are sent back to Guernsey for registration at the Royal Court.

The country is composed of citizens of both British and French descent, with both English and French spoken throughout the country. Financial services and tourism account for a large portion of the economy of Guernsey, with the countries light tax laws making it a popular financial center.
