Uzbekistan, formerly part of the Soviet Union, is a landlocked country located in Central Asia. It shares borders with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan. The country has an area of 447,000 square kilometers, making it the 56th largest country in the world by land area. It is also the 42nd largest country in terms of population.

Uzbekistan is a dry, landlocked country. It is one of only two doubly-landlocked countries, meaning it is surrounded entirely by other landlocked countries. Due to its dry climate, only about ten percent of the country's land is arable. The majority of cultivated land is within the country's river valleys and oases. The vast majority of the country, aside from the few arable sections, consists entirely of desert and mountains. The highest point in Uzbekistan is Adelunga Toghi, which is 4,643 meters tall (15,233 feet). This mountain is located in the southern part of Uzbekistan.

The overall climate is continental, with little precipitation expected annually. On average, the country receives about 100-200 millimeters (3.9-7.9 inches) of rain annually. The average summer temperature is 40 degrees C, while the average winter temperature is around 0 degrees C.
