They gained their independence from the USSR in December 1991. The Kazakhstani people have two official languages, Kazakh and Russian. With a population of approximately 17,948,800 as of 2014, they are still one of the least densely populated countries in the word, ranking 227th at 5.94 people per square kilometer. The main religion practiced in this region is Islam.
