Taiwan is an island located in East Asia. They are controlled by the Republic of China but typically left to govern themselves at local and national levels. The shape of Taiwan is very similar to that of a sweet potato. As a result the people of Taiwan often refer to themselves as "the children of the sweet potato".
To the east of Taiwan is the Pacific Ocean, to the south is the South China Sea, to the west the Taiwan Strait and to the north is the East China Sea. The main island is covered with steep mountains and tropical vegetation.
The weather in Taiwan consists of a rainy season from January to late March. This is followed by meiyu in May. June thru September is typically very hot and humid. The best time of year is typically in October to December. Typhoons and earthquakes are also common natural occurrences in Taiwan. It is classified as a marine tropical climate.
