The Maldives is an island nation situated in the Indian Ocean. Of the over 1,000 islands that make up the chain, only about 1/6th of them are inhabited. But don't assume that means the Maldives are heavily populated: every other country in Asia has more people.

The Maldives finds itself in particular danger due to climate change. That is because every other country in the world has a higher average elevation. The highest point on the islands is less than 10 feet. Therefore, it would not take a large change in the ocean sea levels due to warming to create a threat to the country in the future.

However, because the atolls that make up the Maldive islands are coral reefs, there is some natural protection from the violence of the ocean which surrounds it. To access the lagoons which are known to be less violent, one must located a break in the protective barrier reef. In the case of the Maldives, there is no access from the north, west or east for vessels attempting to pass through without danger.
