Saint Lucia is an island country located north of the country of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and south of the island of Martinique. The country is about 617 square kilometers large, and has a population of 174,000 people, last taken in 2010.
The country has switched between French and British control so many times, it has been likened to Helen of Troy, although eventually Britain gained complete control of the islands. The country gained independence on February 22, 1979, and is considered a parliamentary monarchy under the rule of Queen Elizabeth II.
The capital of the country is Castries, where about 30% of the population of Saint Lucia resides. The country has several large mountains, and has a drive-in volcano, a sight seldom found throughout the world. The main industries of the country are offshore banking and tourism, as well as some manufacturing as well. The government is also attempting to bring back the banana industry as well.
