Located deep in the heart of what is known as the Middle East, the Republic of Iraq is situated on the northern part of the Arabian Desert. The Tigris and Euphrates Rivers run through Iraq, making it a much more arable region than a lot of its surrounding counterparts.

Historically known as the Cradle of Civilization and Mesopotamia in the West, Iraq has been home to many successful civilizations for almost 5000 years. Among these have been the Sumerians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Romans, Ottomans, and British.

Modern day Iraq came to be starting with the end of World War 1 and the breakup of the Ottoman Empire. Through the League of Nations Iraq was placed under control of the United Kingdom. It was this way until the monarchy was overthrown in 1958. The country was run by the Ba'ath Party until its overthrow by US-led coalition forces in 2003. It remained under occupation until late 2011.
