The .ftr extension is the three-letter counterpart to .frontier, secured through ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program on a principle that recurs throughout the round: abbreviations are what customers type, what advertising uses, and what an impersonator would register if the short form were left available. Protecting only the full name leaves the more exploitable string exposed.

Use relates to communications services and campaign destinations where a concise address is preferable. Registration is closed to the public and the extension carries no aftermarket. Three-character strings were the scarcest class of asset in the round, so the paired approach also secured a genuinely irreplaceable piece of namespace.
