Compact and city cars framed the .fiat application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program, one of a family of marque strings filed by a single automotive group that also covered performance and heritage badges. The group-level approach assigned each marque its own namespace on the reasoning that buyers shop by badge rather than by parent company — commercially defensible, but it multiplied registry obligations across a portfolio.

The string is also an ordinary Latin word meaning "let it be done", used in English in financial and legal contexts, which gave it independent meaning outside the automotive sector. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration.
