.afl Domain

The .afl domain extension is a restricted top-level domain delegated through ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program, covering professional Australian rules football. Sporting bodies applied for brand TLDs in the 2012 round to address a specific problem: leagues, clubs, competitions, and fan communities generate a sprawling set of related domains, and an owned extension allows all of them to sit under one verifiable namespace instead of scattered across .com, .com.au, and others.

Use of .afl spans league and competition content, club destinations, ticketing and membership pages, and broadcast or digital campaign sites. The extension is closed to public registration. For sports organizations, it demonstrates how a brand TLD can also serve as anti-piracy infrastructure, giving audiences a straightforward way to tell official streaming and ticketing sources from unauthorised ones.
