Enterprise and consumer security software framed the .symantec application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Security vendors occupy an unusually pointed position: their products are what customers rely on to detect fraud, so a spoofed download or licence-renewal page is both an effective attack and a direct inversion of the brand's purpose.

The extension entered the root zone in December 2015 and its registry agreement was terminated in September 2020, giving it a working life of under five years. Corporate restructuring accounts for much of the round's attrition in this sector, since a security business sold or split leaves its namespace without an owner.
