SAPOʹs business model is based on online advertising. The platform contains graphical, video and contextual text ads for all platforms, including PC, Mobile and Television. SAPO currently has about 40% of the online Portuguese advertising market.
SAPO also takes part in several R&D and talent initiatives. It currently runs two Labs at the University of Aveiro and University of Porto. SAPO also runs an annual event, Codebits, which is a 3 day, 24 hours a day conference with 900 attendees, featuring lectures, workshops and a 48 hour programming competition hosted annually by SAPO for the last 5 years - itʹs the biggest Internet related technology event in Portugal.
According to the Applicant, the mission and purpose of the .SAPO gTLD are manifold, as further explained below:
i. first and foremost: securing and protecting the Applicant's key brand ("SAPO") as a gTLD;
ii. reflecting the SAPO brand at the top level of the DNS' hierarchy;
iii. providing stakeholders of the Applicant with a recognizable and trusted identifier on the Internet. Such stakeholders include, but are not limited to:
• its subsidiaries in various countries;
• affiliate partners;
• prospective and current customers; and
• directors and officers of Portugal Telecom Group and its subsidiaries, including employees.
iv. providing such stakeholders with a secure and safe Internet environment, under the control of the Applicant, in which they are able to obtain genuine information from and communicate with the Applicant and its approved stakeholders;
v. providing a central point of access that is useful and secure, where prospective and current customers might utilize services such as a search engine, e-mail, e-commerce, news, blogging, maps, photographs, videos, real estate and automobile listings, vouchers (discount coupons) etc., which are currently offered through the web portal http://www.SAPO.pt and various other websites.
Furthermore, it should be noted that Portugal Telecom is a global telecommunications operator. It is the national leader in every sector where it operates.
It is largely accepted as the Portuguese entity with the largest national and international projection.
It has a diversified business portfolio in which quality and innovation are decisive aspects, alongside the most advanced international companies in this sector.
The Group's activity covers every segment of the telecommunications sector: fixed, mobile, multimedia, data and corporate solutions.
These telecommunications and multimedia services are available in Portugal, Brazil and in developing international markets.
Portugal Telecom's international footprint spreads to countries like Cape Verde, Mozambique, Timor, Angola, Kenya, China, Brazil, S. Tomé and Príncipe and Namibia.
In the Brazilian market, PT is present in Oi, the largest telecommunications operator in South America, and in Contax, Brazilʹs leading contact center services company.
The Group's growth has been consolidating through the development of new businesses in areas of rapid growth, for example mobile voice and data services, multimedia and broadband internet access. With this, Portugal Telecom has contributed to the development of the Information Society which is a priority for the company in terms of developing innovative solutions and successfully dealing with the challenges of both enterprises and citizens.
Partnerships and strategic agreements celebrated with key companies in each sector have contributed towards the improvement in capacity and product availability.
