Local news and community information framed the .patch application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Hyperlocal news platforms have a genuine namespace case: coverage is organized by town and neighborhood, generating hundreds of location-specific destinations that would otherwise sit on separately registered domains with no visible connection to each other.

The string is also an ordinary English noun and verb with substantial independent demand — in software patching, textiles, and horticulture among others — placing it among the round's contested dictionary-word cases. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
