Department store retail framed the .jcp application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Department stores brought a broad exposure to the round: a single retailer spans apparel, beauty, homewares, and jewellery, each with its own counterfeit market, while gift-card and loyalty fraud built on imitation domains spikes predictably around seasonal shopping periods.

The string is a three-letter abbreviation of a longer retail name, filed on the reasoning that customers use the short form — though three-character strings carried independent value in the round regardless of what they stood for. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
