Mechanical watchmaking framed the .iwc application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Swiss horology carries one of the most acute counterfeiting exposures in luxury goods: replicas are manufactured at every quality tier, sold through sites that mimic authorised retailer pages, and buyers checking authenticity rely on serial-number and service records where provenance is the whole question.

Three-character strings were the round's scarcest asset, which made this application valuable independent of its sector. Swiss applicants were a small contingent concentrated in watchmaking, banking, and pharmaceuticals. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
