Semiconductors, processors, and computing platforms framed the .intel application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Chip manufacturers sit at the base of the technology supply chain, where driver packages, firmware updates, and microcode patches are downloaded directly into systems worldwide — a distribution surface on which a spoofed source compromises the hardware it is meant to service.

The extension was delegated in July 2016 and its registry agreement ended in November 2020, giving it a working life of roughly four years — among the shorter runs of any delegated brand extension. The string is also an ordinary English abbreviation for intelligence, widely used in military and business contexts, so its withdrawal removes a common word from availability entirely. It cannot be registered or acquired by any party.
