Web portal, search, email, and digital media services sit behind .yahoo, a restricted extension from ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Legacy portal and email brands carry an exposure newer services do not: account bases built over decades include large numbers of dormant or lightly managed mailboxes, and an email account remains the reset mechanism for nearly every other account its owner holds.

Use covers portal and news destinations, mail and account services, and regional sites. Registration is closed to the public and the extension carries no aftermarket. The string is also an ordinary English noun, taken from an eighteenth-century satirical novel, giving it independent literary recognition.
