New TLD Launch Program: Track the launches and protect the brand Follow for updates!

Why the 2026 round matters

For nearly three decades, the gTLD namespace barely moved. Six original TLDs launched in 1985: .com, .org, .net, .edu, .gov, and .mil, joined by a modest early-2000s expansion that added .info, .biz, .name, .pro, and .mobi, among others. That left just 22 gTLDs serving the entire internet.

Mounting industry demand and ICANN's maturing policy framework finally lifted that ceiling with the landmark 2012 New gTLD Program, and the results reshaped the market. New gTLDs have driven roughly a third of all net new domain growth since 2014 and continue to outpace the legacy namespace year over year.

Now, in the 2026 Round, that same demand is playing out at scale. A total of 1,616 initial applications were submitted to ICANN, giving businesses more opportunity than ever to claim the extension that fits their brand, their community, or their market, before someone else does.
