Passenger vehicles and commercial vans framed the .volkswagen application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. High-volume marques had the strongest version of the automotive consolidation argument: dealer networks running to thousands of outlets generate enormous quantities of locally targeted domains, with no reliable way for a buyer to tell an authorised dealer from an unaffiliated lead-generation site.

The string is also an ordinary German compound meaning people's car, one of many round applications where a marque name is plain vocabulary in its home language. Automotive strings saw heavy attrition after the round. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
