.spiegel Domain

News publishing and current affairs journalism framed the .spiegel application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. News organizations carry a specific exposure a closed namespace addresses directly: fabricated articles published on lookalike domains and circulated as screenshots are a documented disinformation technique that trades entirely on a masthead's credibility.

The string is also the ordinary German word for mirror, one of several round applications where a publication's name is common vocabulary in its home language. German media applicants were a small contingent relative to the country's broader industrial participation. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
