Premium television and original programming framed the .showtime application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Subscription content producers face an anti-piracy problem that advertising-funded broadcasters do not: unauthorised streaming directly substitutes for a paid subscription, and pirate services present themselves through domains imitating official addresses.

The string is also an ordinary English compound noun and a common exclamation, giving it independent demand well beyond broadcasting. Media brand strings were among the most affected by industry consolidation, as network and studio mergers reshaped corporate identities faster than a permanently bound extension could follow. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration.
