Professional basketball sits behind .nba, a three-letter restricted extension from ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Sports leagues brought a distinctive namespace problem: leagues, franchises, competitions, statistics, and fan communities generate a sprawling set of related domains that no supporter can reliably distinguish from unofficial ones.

Use covers league and team content, statistics and scheduling resources, ticketing and merchandise destinations, and international market sites. Registration is closed to the public and the extension carries no aftermarket. Leagues with substantial international followings have a sharper version of the problem, since overseas fans are furthest from the official channels and most exposed to unauthorised streaming and merchandise.
