The .mutual string is an ordinary English adjective and noun naming an entire ownership model in insurance and financial services, applied for in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. It sits in the round's most contested territory: a descriptive category term with obvious demand from every mutual insurer, building society, and cooperative in the sector.

Granting such a string to a single applicant forecloses it for an entire class of organizations that describe themselves by the same word — the core of the closed-generic argument that ran through the program. It was filed alongside .mutualfunds by the same applicant. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
