Quick-service restaurants and franchised food retail framed the .mcdonalds application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Franchise networks present the dealer-verification problem at enormous scale: tens of thousands of independently operated outlets trading under one brand, with local promotions, recruitment, and delivery arrangements generating domains no customer can easily verify.

Fake voucher and prize promotions built on imitation domains are also a persistent nuisance for quick-service brands, circulated through messaging apps where the offer is plausible enough to be forwarded. The extension was delegated but never developed into public-facing use, and is not currently active in the DNS root zone. It is not available for registration by any party.
