Passenger vehicles framed the .lancia application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program, one of a family of marque strings filed by a single automotive group that also covered performance and mainstream badges. The portfolio approach assigned each badge its own namespace on the reasoning that buyers shop by marque rather than by parent company.

Heritage marques with contracting model ranges proved the most fragile members of such portfolios: when a badge narrows to a handful of markets, the case for maintaining a dedicated registry alongside every other group string disappears first. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
