Afrikaans-language television programming framed the .kyknet application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. It belonged to a substantial family of related media strings filed together by a single African broadcasting group — one of the largest coordinated multi-string applications from outside the major Western and East Asian markets.

Language-specific channel strings are an unusual category: the namespace serves a linguistic community rather than a geographic market, which is a genuine use case for an owned extension but also ties it to a channel brand that can be retired on a programming cycle. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
