Broadband and internet services in the Australian market framed the .iinet application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Internet service providers occupy an unusual position among applicants: they supply the connection through which every other domain is reached, which makes their own account and billing pages a particularly effective phishing target — a customer who loses those credentials can lose their email and connectivity together.

Australian applicants were well represented relative to market size, with telecoms and banking accounting for most of the contingent. The lowercase double-i construction also made the string visually distinctive, a consideration that mattered more in the round than it might appear, since confusability with existing strings was an evaluation criterion. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
