.hotmail Domain Information

Consumer webmail sits behind .hotmail, a restricted extension from ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Legacy email brands carry an exposure that newer services do not: account bases built over decades include large numbers of dormant or lightly managed mailboxes, and an email account remains the reset mechanism for nearly every other account its owner holds.

Use relates to mail services and account resources. Registration is closed to the public and the extension carries no aftermarket. The namespace also provides continuity for a brand whose service has been folded into a successor product — an extension can outlive the service it was named for, which is a reason to hold it even when active development stops.
