Home improvement, design, and property programming framed the .hgtv application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Lifestyle broadcasters were enthusiastic media applicants, and the logic was content-led: home and design content generates enormous search volume, and a namespace naming the subject area was expected to carry editorial authority into the address itself.

Channel-brand strings proved structurally fragile, however. A television channel can be rebranded, merged, or retired on a normal programming cycle, while an extension stays permanently bound to its string. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
