Heavy equipment, construction machinery, and industrial infrastructure framed the .doosan application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program, filed under Specification 13 as a closed single-registrant namespace. Korean industrial groups were a small contingent in the round, and the rationale matched other heavy-equipment applicants: parts, service, and technical documentation are consulted by operators sourcing for machines with decades-long service lives.

The extension holds a specific place in the program's history as the first new gTLD ever removed from the DNS root zone, in 2016, after the operator elected to terminate. It established the pattern that has governed every brand TLD withdrawal since — the string is retired rather than reassigned, cannot be registered or acquired by any party, and returns only through a future ICANN application round.
