Food programming and recipe content framed the .cookingchannel application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Lifestyle broadcasters were among the more enthusiastic media applicants, and the logic was content-led rather than defensive: recipe and program pages are searched for in enormous volume, and a namespace naming the subject matter directly was expected to carry editorial authority into the address itself.

Channel-brand strings proved structurally fragile, however. A television channel can be rebranded, merged, or retired on a normal programming cycle, whereas an extension is permanently bound to its string and cannot follow. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and cannot be registered by any party.
