Broadcast television, news, and entertainment production frame the .cbs application from ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Network broadcasters faced two overlapping problems that a dedicated namespace addresses: unauthorised streaming of live programming distributed through domains that imitate official addresses, and fabricated news content attributed to a trusted newsroom brand.

Its registry agreement dates from August 2015, held Specification 13 .brand status, and was later terminated. Media brand TLDs were among the most affected by consolidation, as network and studio mergers reshaped corporate identities faster than an extension — permanently bound to its string — could follow. The string cannot be registered or purchased.
