Web search and related services sit behind .bing, a short closed extension from ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Search platform applications carried a specific rationale: search is the entry point through which most users reach everything else online, so a spoofed search or results page is an unusually effective position from which to redirect traffic or harvest queries and credentials.

An extension nobody else can register into gives the platform's own properties a structurally verifiable address. Use covers search services, webmaster and developer resources, and regional destinations. .bing domains cannot be registered, transferred, or purchased by third parties, and the extension has no retail presence.
