Apparel and lifestyle retail framed the .bananarepublic application in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Fashion retail brought a specific problem to that round: counterfeit and fake-outlet operations are built almost entirely on domain registration, and because they are cheap to spin up and disposable, enforcement against individual sites never keeps pace with the rate of new ones appearing.

A registry agreement was signed in July 2015, the extension qualified for Specification 13 as a .brand TLD, and the agreement was subsequently terminated. Retail and apparel brand TLDs saw heavy attrition, as registry obligations sat poorly alongside marketing cycles measured in seasons and a channel mix shifting toward marketplace and social commerce.
