Enterprise cloud computing sits behind .azure, a restricted extension from ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. Like other platform namespaces from that round, its role is closer to infrastructure than marketing: enterprise customers reference service endpoints, documentation, and portal addresses across internal systems and security allowlists, and a namespace no outsider can register into makes those references safe to trust by default.

Use spans documentation and developer resources, service and regional destinations, and customer-facing portals. No public registration route exists and the extension has no aftermarket. The string is also an ordinary colour word, which made it an unusual case in the round — a dictionary term applied for on brand grounds rather than as an open generic.
