.acer Domain

The .acer domain extension was applied for during ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program as a single-registrant namespace in consumer computing hardware. The technology sector was among the heaviest participants in that round, and the reasoning was consistent across applicants: a dedicated extension ties product, support, and driver download content to a namespace that cannot be imitated by registration, addressing a long-standing problem where fake support and driver sites target hardware owners.

The application did not proceed to delegation. No registry agreement was ever signed, so the extension has never existed in the DNS root zone — a common outcome in the 2012 round, where a substantial share of applications were withdrawn before contracting. Strings in this position cannot be registered, and returning one to consideration would require a new ICANN application round.
