The .abc domain extension was delegated under ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program as a restricted namespace associated with broadcast television and entertainment. As one of the shortest and most generically appealing strings in the round, .abc carried obvious commercial interest, and securing it as a closed extension prevented a widely recognizable three-letter string from entering the open market where it would have attracted heavy defensive registration and abuse.

Domains under .abc are issued internally and used for network, program, and local affiliate content, along with campaign and streaming destinations. The extension is not open to public registration. Its wider relevance is as an example of the defensive dimension of the 2012 round: for holders of short, memorable marks, applying for the string was often cheaper over time than policing it across an expanding open namespace.
