.pin Domain

The .pin extension is a three-character restricted namespace from ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program. The string is an ordinary English noun and verb with unusually broad independent demand — a fastener, a map marker, a bowling target, and, most consequentially, the standard abbreviation for a personal identification number.

There is no registration channel, pricing, or aftermarket for .pin domains; use is confined to the operator's own destinations. That last association is worth noting on its own: a widely delegated namespace matching the abbreviation for an authentication credential would have carried obvious phishing potential in open hands, which is an argument for restriction that the round rarely articulated explicitly.
