The .passagens string is the Portuguese word for travel tickets or fares, applied for in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program as part of a multilingual family covering the same travel concept across several languages. Filing translated equivalents of a descriptive term was a recognizable strategy in the round, aimed at holding a category keyword across major language markets rather than in English alone.

Language-family applications expose an inconsistency in how the program treated generics: a word that is plainly a category term in its own language attracts less scrutiny than its English equivalent, simply because fewer objectors are reading. The extension is not currently active in the DNS root zone and is not available for registration by any party.
