.circle Domain

The .circle extension is another of the round's closed generics: an ordinary English noun delegated on a restricted basis rather than opened for registration, secured through ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program by a single operator for its own service portfolio. Short dictionary words were among the most contested strings in the round precisely because they carry meaning and recall that no coined name can match.

There is no registration channel, pricing, or aftermarket for .circle domains. For businesses in community, social, or membership services the extension is notable chiefly as an illustration of how a versatile everyday word can be permanently withdrawn from the open namespace — a recurring argument in policy debate over how generics should be treated in future rounds.
