Unlike the brand strings around it, .catalonia was proposed in ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program as a geographic extension for the Catalan region, intended for regional institutions, businesses, tourism, and cultural organizations rather than a single registrant. Geographic applications followed a different process from brand ones, requiring documented support from the relevant public authority — a requirement that shaped which regional strings advanced and which did not.

The application did not proceed to delegation. No registry agreement was ever signed, so the extension has never existed in the DNS root zone — geographic applications required documented public-authority support, a bar that shaped which regional strings advanced. Strings in this position cannot be registered, and returning one to consideration would require a new ICANN application round.
