DPML stands for the Domains Protected Marks List. DPML protects trademark holders against cybersquatting at a fraction of what it would cost to defensively register the terms across Identity Digital TLDs.
Identity Digital is the largest registry operator for new generic top level domains (gTLDs) with over 300 new TLDs currently and are expected to add more in the future.
A DPML domain blocking subscription offers an innovative, cost-effective solution to protect your brand's trademarks, prevent cybersquatting and ensure that domain names are available for your future use—on your terms and your timeframe.
Each DPML subscription applies across all TLDs operated by Identity Digital. The earlier a DPML subscription is purchased, the more useful it is. A DPML subscription does not block individual domain registrations made prior to that subscription.
Brand owners must submit an exact match of their trademark(s), or a term that contains their exact match trademark(s). Once a term is accepted, that term is blocked from domain registration in all Identity Digital TLDs for the subscription duration. A DPML subscription then can be purchased or renewed in increments of one to ten years. Domains blocked by DPML are inactive until you decide you wish to put them to use for your business.
Protect your brand with enhanced homograph coverage. Included in DPML and DPML+, homograph protection is a powerful new feature that protects against millions of malicious variant domain registrations that use internationalized domain names (IDNs) to imitate your brand.
DPML subscriptions are a fraction of the cost of typical defense registrations. This is especially compelling given the need to block attacks from the potential millions of malicious homographic registrations using IDNs.

DPML stands for the Domains Protected Marks List. Brand owners can add their trademark-related terms into the DPML and have them blocked from domain registration at the second level in all Identity Digital top-level domains. DPML protects trademark holders against cybersquatting at a fraction of what it would cost to defensively register the domain names in Identity Digital TLDs.
Identity Digital is the largest registry operator for new gTLDs. They manage over 300 new TLDs currently and are expected to add more that will be added to the DPML service in the future.
Brand owners must first have their trademark validated by the Trademark ClearingHouse (TMCH). Once validated, a Signed Mark Data file (SMD file) is generated and must be provided in order to register a DPML block successfully.
Once the DPML block is in place, your trademarked term(s) is blocked from domain registration in all Identity Digital TLDs for an initial period of five years for DPML Basic or ten years for a DPML plus. A DPML subscription then can be renewed in increments of one to ten years. A domain blocked by DPML is not functional, meaning it may not be used for a website URL, e-mail address, or other type of domain-related functionality.
The trademark holder must first register their mark(s) with the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). 101domain is a Trademark Clearinghouse Agent and can assist you with this process. The mark must be registered according to the "use" standard, which is the same standard for registration during the Sunrise period. Once you register your mark in the TMCH you will be able to submit an exact match of your mark to DPML or you can submit a term that contains an exact match mark.
Previously Registered Domains: A term will not be blocked in any TLD where that term is already registered as a domain. If a domain is initially excluded from DPML because it is already registered, a rights holder may still subscribe to DPML (and block the term in all other Identity Digital TLDs) . If the previously registered domain expires or is deleted, DPML protection will then automatically apply to that domain name.
Premium Domains: In Identity Digital TLDs, most domains are priced as standard. However, there are a limited number of higher-priced premium names. DPML blocks terms for standard priced names only. DPML Plus, however, will block any premium names.
Other Sunrise Rights: Another trademark holder with Sunrise rights for a term may register that term as a domain name, even when a DPML subscription exists for it. This is known as an "override".
A DPML block on a specific domain may be overridden and the domain registered by any trademark owner with Sunrise rights to that domain. The party performing an override must have an exact match, Sunrise-eligible trademark for the domain (i.e., the overriding party must have a valid Signed Mark Data, or SMD, file issued by the TMCH).
For the DPML Basic, an override can be performed at any time and can be initiated by the owner of the DPML account, or by another trademark owner. For the DPML plus, overrides cannot be performed by anyone except the current DPML owner.
There are no fees for overrides.
One- and two-character DPML terms are not permitted. Three-character DPML terms are permitted but only as an exact match of the trademark.
Yes, the WHOIS output identifies the DPML account holder for the domain and states that the domain is blocked from registration. When searching, use .PLUS.DPML or .DPML.
Yes. The trademark should remain current and active in the Trademark Clearinghouse throughout the life of the DPML. Identity Digital may elect to remove a DPML block for certain domains if the corresponding trademark is not kept current in the TMCH.
An override can be done at any time, however we recommend doing the override during the Sunrise phase. There are 2 main purposes for doing an override:
If someone else has an exact match trademark and valid SMD, they have the option to override your DPMLblock unless you have already performed the override or own the DPML Plus.
Currently this feature is not available.
It is not possible to override an override, because that would be a domain registration.
Overrides are a manual process that can usually be completed within 24 hours after payment. Please fill out the forms above and we will contact you to complete.
