CENTR Releases ccTLD Report
CENTR, the European coutry-code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) organization that promotes standards amongst ccTLD operators, recently released its biannual publication covering ccTLD standings and listed the top 20 ccTLDs in order of domains under management. The report shows that ccTLDs have a growing share of the global domain name market. In 2012, they held 42 percent of the market; in 2013, they hold 44 percent and market share is continuing to grow. The total number of domains registered (in all categories worldwide) grew by 6 percent to 258,428,563 domain names.
The report drills down on European ccTLDs and gives a status update. There are just over 64 million domain under management in Europe as of April 2013 with an overall net growth of 6.7 percent. Renewal rates stand at about 79 percent. It was interesting to note that larger registries generally had lower renewal rates. The highest penetration rate in terms of registrations per capita occurred in Liechtenstein, Montenegro, and the Netherlands (188, 105, and 31 domains per person respectively).
