Africa Falls Short on gTLD’s

Africa has made little attempt to apply to the new top level gTLD’s. Africa as a whole applied for 4 predictable geographic generic top level domains .joburg, .durban, .capetown and .africa and two companies bought a few, M-Net and MultiChoice to cover their branding. A stake in the digital real estate will now become available to the public.  However, we have to keep in perspective that not every big player has bought a new gTLD, even bigwig Facebook hasn’t so it might not be an earth shattering end. The two biggest applicants were applicant Donuts Inc who applied for 307 gTLD’s and Google who applied for 101 names. To read further on this topic click here.
