The mission and purpose of the .IEEE gTLD is to serve the IEEE community and to assist in its mission to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.

IEEE, a New York not-for-profit corporation whose legal name is The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Incorporated, has more than 400,000 members around the world. This makes it the world's largest educational and scientific organization dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.

The only allowed registrant in the new gTLD will be IEEE Global LLC ("IEEE Global"). Control of content in the gTLD will be limited to IEEE, IEEE's corporate subsidiaries, and IEEE's organizational units. (IEEE's organizational units are not legally separate or autonomous entities, but groupings of members, organized by geographic area, technical specialty, or other area of interest.)

IEEE Global will use the gTLD to promote and provide support for IEEE's programs, activities and services, including growth and development of the IEEE community, conferences, meetings, publications, education, and technical standards development.

Notwithstanding the limitations on the control of content in the gTLD, the intended end-users of the gTLD will include both members and non-members of IEEE. Like IEEE members, non-members will be encouraged to visit and interact with websites and other content attached to domain names in the gTLD. For example, they will be invited to attend IEEE technical conferences that are promoted or facilitated on websites in the .IEEE gTLD, and to obtain and contribute to IEEE technical standards and publications. IEEE's goal of technological innovation for the benefit of humanity is an inclusive one, which requires sharing information and ideas and working with a wider community of non-members.×
