  • Why are name servers required?
  • Every domain name has name servers that handle queries for its information or records. Whats in a name server? It contains one or more DNS databases to store Internet hostnames and their associated IP addresses. DNS records need to be maintained by people.
    Name servers are queried by various programs and other name servers to convert domain names into IP addresses all day long. Each name server, called a primary name server, usually has a back-up server, called a secondary name server, so that this can be done uninterrupted. Both primary and secondary name servers hold the authoritative data of a domain name.
    If you wish to receive e-mail from the Internet you need to have a Mail Exchange (MX) record for your domain name in your DNS database. There are two ways to get name servers for your domain name:
    * create and administer them yourself.
    * pay an Internet Service Provider or a hosting company to handle them for you.
  • Can anyone register for domain names?
  • * Organizations are permitted to apply for .com.my; .net.my; and .org.my. Organizations have to provide 101Domain with proper documentation to prove their company status when applying.
    * Individuals aged 18 and above, holding a Malaysian National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) can apply for personal domain names (.name.my).
    * The second level domain name (.my) can be registered by all Malaysian entities whether organisation /individual as it is free of categorization.
    * As for .edu.my; .mil.my; and .gov.my, the registrations are directly under 101Domain and only certified agencies under the education, military and government sectors can apply for those names.
  • How many domain names can be registered?
  • * .my unlimited number of names per applicant.
    * .com.my; .net.my, .org.my unlimited number of names per organization.
    * .name.my up to eight (8) per NRIC.
    * .edu.my; .mil.my;.gov.my unlimited number of names per organization.
  • Can registration be done on behalf of spouses and children?
  • * Anyone above the age of 18, must submit individual applications.
    * For minors below the age of 18 years old, parents are authorised to register domain names on their behalf. There is a section called Subsidiary Information in the application form where you fill details of the minor. However, it is important to note that you are completely responsible for any domain name registered under yourself, and you will be the only one with whom 101Domain will deal.
  • What if the applicant is not Malaysian?
  • The applicant must have valid proof of residing in Malaysia, have a valid passport and aged 18 and above.
  • What if the applicant is Malaysian but currently living abroad?
  • This would only apply for individual applicants, the name can be registered as long as applicant states NRIC number and is 18 years and above.
    * For businesses, companies have to have a presence in Malaysia to be able to register a domain name.
  • What are the categories of domains?
  • Yes. These are the third-level domains available for registration:
    * com.my = For commercial organizations/activities
    * net.my = For network-related organizations/activities
    * org.my = For organizations/activities which do not qualify for other categories
    * edu.my = For Malaysian educational organizations only
    * gov.my = For Malaysian government organizations only
    * mil.my = For Malaysian military organizations only
    * name.my = For Malaysian individual's personal use only
  • What about second-level domains?
  • * .my = For all Malaysian individuals and entities
    * Except for the .gov.my, .edu.my and .mil.my domain names which have special requirements, it is your responsibility to select the most appropriate second level domain name.
    * For organizations considering .com.my/.net.my/.org.my/ .my domain names, your choice of second or third-level domain name should closely match or best reflect your organisations area of interest/activities. This is an attempt to avoid confusion in cyberspace, as Internet users often assume some implied correlation with the second level domain name used.
  • Can any name be registered as a domain name?
  • All domain names will end with the preferred category. The domain name label to the left of the chosen domain name should reflect applicant's company/personal name. However nicknames are common. Because registration is on a `first come, first served` basis, domain names must not:
    * have already been registered to another applicant;
    * be the subject of an application currently under consideration by 101Domain;
    * using any sensitive/vulgar words that is prohibited by MYNIC.
    Doing a search using the 101Domain Whois Service will reveal if your chosen domain name is available.
