- An Internet Domain Name is the text name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer on the Internet. Internet users access your website using your domain name. A domain name must be unique.
- What is a Top Level Domain (TLD)?
- A Top Level Domain (TLD) is the last part of an Internet Domain Name; that is, the letters which follow the final "dot" of any URL. For example, in the domain name mtld.mobi, the top-level domain is .mobi.
- What is .mobi?
- .mobi is a top-level domain (TLD) approved by ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. .mobi is unique it is the first top-level domain dedicated to delivering the internet to the mobile phone. .mobi is sponsored by a consortium of companies which includes the most prominent mobile and Internet players in the world.
- What is a Registrar?
- A Registrar processes domain name registrations for end users and then sends the necessary information to a registry for entry into the centralized registry database. In short, 101Domain is a Registrar.
- What is a Registrant?
- A Registrant is the person or company that registers a domain name (namely, you).
- How do I find out what domain names have been registered?
- A central database known as WHOIS tracks all domain name registrations. Each domain name registrar typically maintains its own version of a WHOIS database.
- When can I start using my domain name address?
- Once the .mobi registry has been updated, the information in our database is shared with the Internet's zone files worldwide. This sharing process is called "propagation," because the new information about your domain spreads or propagates across the Internet. .mobi cannot control the rate at which the millions of name servers on the Internet are updated, but generally your domain should be available to Internet users within a very short period.
- What is meant by the term resolve in relation to a domain name?
- The term is used to describe the process by which domain names are matched with corresponding Internet Protocol (IP) numbers to direct a user to a website.
- What is the Domain Name System (DNS)?
- The Domain Name System is the Internet naming scheme which consists of a hierarchical sequence of names, from the most specific to the most general (left to right), separated by dots, for example www.mtld.mobi.
- What is a Domain Name Server (DNS)?
- This is a server that matches up the URL of a website, for example, www.mTLD.mobi, with its proper numeric IP address. Whenever a web page is requested the web browser must consult the domain name server to find out what is the numeric translation of the URL.
- What is an URL?
- A Uniform Resource Locator is a unique identifying address used to locate a site on the World Wide Web, for example, http://www.mtld.mobi.
- What is an IP address?
- This is the unique, numeric address of each computer connected to the Internet. It is also called an Internet address.
- Will the domain names registered during the General Registration period be available for review by the general public?
- Yes, the domain names registered during this period will be available for review by the public through the WHOIS service.
- What is a premium name?
- The premium name list is a compilation of commonly used (generic) words and phrases which dotMobi (mTLD, Ltd.) has set aside for equitable allocation using other than a traditional first-come, first-served basis.
- When will the Premium Names be made available to the general public and how will they be allocated?
- Now that the four-week Premium Name Application Process for Trademark Holders (see below for details) has concluded, .mobi will commence allocation of the remainder of Premium Names in batches over the next couple of years using an equitable allocation process.
A subset of the premium names will be sold via a Request for Proposal [RFP] process. RFP submittals will be evaluated for benefit to mobile users. The remainder of premium names will be sold via auctions, both live and online.
