  • What is a domain name?
  • A domain name is a unique alpha-numeric name used to locate a specific computer on the Internet.
  • What does it mean to "register" a .hk domain name?
  • To register a .hk domain name means that an organization is requesting a right to use the registered name on the Internet. The organization which wishes to register this .hk domain name must accept the latest Registration Agreement set by Hong Kong Domain Registry.
  • How long can I use a domain name after registration?
  • A domain name may be registered for a period of 1, 2, 3 or 5 years depending on our choice of domain name types and payment selection.
  • What are the differences among .com.hk, .net.hk, .edu.hk, .org.hk and .gov.hk?
  • Domain names ending with .com.hk, .net.hk or .org.hk are tailored for different kinds of organizations and .idv.hk is designed for registering by an individual given that you are able to fulfill the criteria set for these domain names.
  • I noticed that my desired domain name is unavailable. What should I do?
  • Registration of domain name is on a first-come, first-served basis. If your desired domain name is registered, you can consider trying another favorite domain name.
  • If my desired domain name has been registered by another party, can I reserve the said domain name and make registration till it's contract ended?
  • Since domain name registered under the latest HKDNR Registration Agreement, can be renewed annually, normally we do not accept reservation for any registered domain names.
  • What is a Second-Level '.hk'domain name?
  • Second-Level '.hk' domain name ('2LD') refers to the new domain name category (e.g. 'myname.hk') which is shorter as compared to the existing 3rd Level categories (e.g. 'myname.com.hk'). The primary aim of 2LD is to provide more choices on '.hk' domain name to the public.
  • What are the various domain name categories and who are they reserved for?
  • .hk: Easy-to-remember domain name for any company, organization or person aged 11 or above (e.g. myname.hk)
    .idv.hk: For Hong Kong ID cardholders aged 11 or above (e.g. myname.idv.hk)
    .com.hk: For commercial entities with Business Registration Certificates OR Certificates of Registration of Overseas Company (e.g. mycompany.com.hk)
    .net.hk: For entities managing network infrastructure, machines and services with PNETS (IVANS/ISP) licenses from OFTA (e.g. mycompany.net.hk)
    .edu.hk: For educational organizations with Certificates of Registration of School OR other approved institutions of the same nature (e.g. myorganization.edu.hk)
    .org.hk: For non-profit-making organizations registered with the Companies Registry OR with Certificates of Registration of Society OR other relevant documentary proofs (e.g. myorganization.org.hk)
    .gov.hk: For bureau and departments of the HKSAR Government (e.g. department.gov.hk)
